Post Natal Depression & Food

In my role as a health and female fitness coach, I see a lot of women with post natal depression.  It can be mild and just shows itself as a few tears and a general feeling of being down or fed up.  Or, it can be completely overwhelming and sometimes require help from doctors and psychiatrists.  I wanted to blog about the link between post natal depression and nutrition as it is SO important.

The Mummy Tummy Myth

Not a day goes by that I don't see a woman lamenting her stomach following childbirth.  It really is a cause of much angst and upset amongst us women.  It's a huge shock to see your stomach emerge post labour, especially if you've been fit and active before and if you've had a rather large baby!

I Just Want To Be Me Again!

It's only quite recently that women have been so concerned about losing weight after children.  I've been thinking a lot about this and genuinely don't remember my mum worrying about her weight as half as much as I do.  I remember her sitting on holiday in a bikini with a drink (probably a Martini!) and absolutely not caring a jot about what anyone thought of her.  We are constantly exposed to images that aren't real and pressures that are not really there if you really think about it.  Who really cares if you have a few extra pounds after having children?

When are weights NOT the answer?

I have seen a big increase in women lifting weights in the gym and at classes lately.  This is a great step forward for women wanting to improve and maximise their body shape and improve body composition.  However, when are lifting weights not appropriate?

Are you eating enough to support your fat loss?

Recently a client has reached a stop in her weight and fat loss.  She was still exercising a lot, doing sessions with me and also in other classes.  When she couldn't see the results she was after, we looked again at her nutrition.  She kept a food diary for a week before coming to see me again and the answer was very clear.  She was simply not eating enough and was hungry even after eating.  There is a big difference between eating for WEIGHT LOSS than eating for FAT LOSS.  She is now back on track and we hope to see the results she wants.
